Influencers are entrepreneurs

Product placements, brand collaborations, and sponsored travel are part of the daily routine for successful creators. However, any form of compensation – including non-cash benefits – can have tax implications. What is often underestimated is that influencers are considered entrepreneurs for tax purposes, even if no cash payments are made and social media activities may appear informal or recreational. We ensure that all income and non-cash benefits are properly recorded, documented, and taxed – while also handling communication with the tax authorities.

This allows creators to focus on what matters most: content and community.

Risks in collaborations, travel, and product placements

Many content creators underestimate the complexity of tax obligations. Especially when it comes to non-cash benefits, proper valuation and thorough documentation are critical to ensuring a smooth outcome in the event of a tax audit. We take care of the tax classification, structuring, and processing – from bookkeeping to communication with the tax authorities.

We handle the tax treatment of all income and non-cash benefits, establish clear structures in accounting and documentation, and support all ongoing tax processes. This includes continuous advisory services as well as coordination with the tax office, for example, in responding to inquiries, handling audits, or clarifying specific matters.

For agencies, clearly defined tax processes are equally essential, as well-organized structures on the creator side help safeguard collaborations and reduce liability risks and operational friction in day-to-day business.

Typical Issues in influencer collaborations

  • Benefits in kind (products, travel, invitations): Products, press samples, trips, or event invitations may initially appear to be free perks. From a tax perspective, however, they may qualify as business income and must be properly recorded and documented at their fair market value. Without proper valuation, there is a risk of additional tax assessments or inquiries from the tax authorities.
  • Non-cash benefits from collaborations: Even if no traditional payment is made, non-cash benefits received through collaborations are subject to taxation. What matters is not the cash flow, but the economic benefit the influencer receives as part of the cooperation.
  • Barter transactions with brands: Posts, stories, or videos provided in exchange for products, travel, or services constitute taxable barter transactions. The publication of content replaces monetary payment but is still treated as income and must be taxed accordingly.
  • Private use of collaboration benefits: If non-cash benefits received through collaborations are used wholly or partially for private purposes, this may result in taxable personal drawings. Without a clear distinction between business and personal use, this can lead to unexpected tax consequences.
  • VAT obligations: Non-cash benefits may also be relevant for VAT purposes. Depending on the structure of the collaboration, the nature of the service relationship, and the influencer’s entrepreneurial status, VAT may apply – both to the benefits received and to the services provided in return.
