Foreign Trade Consulting and Sustainability: Baker Tilly hires Attorney-at-Law Sebastian Billig

Within the scope of the advisory portfolio’s targeted expansion, Sebastian Billig starts at Baker Tilly's Munich office.

Düsseldorf, May 7, 2021 - The international consulting firm Baker Tilly has announced another new member at partner level: Sebastian Billig, an expert in foreign trade, customs and sustainable management, will be responsible for building up the firm's foreign trade competence center from Baker Tilly’s Munich office. The firm is thus consistently and purposefully expanding its consulting portfolio. Only recently, the firm announced the recruitment of the renowned construction and real estate lawyer and notary Simon Parviz as well as the China team around attorney-at-law Yan Zhang.

In addition to advising domestic and foreign clients on foreign trade, Billig will also be involved in the acquisition and handling of complex transactions related to foreign trade law. Billig, who is also CEO of the German Organization for Sustainable Consumption (Organisation für nachhaltigen Konsum gGmbH), will furthermore accelerate sustainability-related consulting (ESG and Due Diligence Act/Supply Chain Act) and will also place an emphasis on these topics in the Baker Tilly Foundation.

“The number of embargoes, sanctions and licensing requirements in foreign trade is constantly increasing, and the associated foreign trade related compliance and the establishment of internal processes are presenting companies with ever new challenges. In addition, the first-time export control regulations in China pose new risks for our clients engaged in foreign trade that need to be addressed. Therefore, we are happy to take the next logical step of consistently expanding our advisory portfolio together with Sebastian Billig," said Oliver Hubertus, Partner at Baker Tilly and member of the Management Board. "His expertise on sustainable management is a valuable gain for our consulting portfolio, especially in these times when climate change and supply chains are coming into the focus of many legislative considerations."

Billig started his professional career in 2001 as an export control officer at Lufthansa Technik Logistik GmbH in Hamburg, before starting with KPMG AG Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft in 2004, where he advised clients in the field of customs and excise law in the "Indirect Tax" department. In 2006, he became a partner in the law firm HLDS Hohenlohe. In 2008, Billig was appointed managing director of the Munich-based Wolffgang & Harksen Außenwirtschaftsberatung GmbH. The focus of advising both DAX-listed and medium-sized companies was on the implementation and auditing of export control law processes and the development of compliance measures. In 2014, Billig established the law firm Billig & Creydt Rechtsanwälte Partnergesellschaft mbB in Munich where he advised both listed and medium-sized companies in all areas of foreign trade law.
